Bromo Without the Sunrise Start, plus Madakaripura Waterfall
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
SurabayaEvery other Bromo tour wakes you in the middle of the night. This one does not. It leaves in the morning at a reasonable hour, reaches the volcano once the sunrise crowd has gone home, and gets the place at its emptiest. That is the whole argument, and for a couple, a family or anyone off a cruise ship with a single day ashore it is a strong one. Pick-up is from anywhere in Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo, in a private car, with a guide who stays with you for the day. Madakaripura waterfall comes first. A bike taxi takes you as far as the entrance and the rest is on foot, through water. You will get wet, and there is no version of the visit where you do not. If the day is running short, the waterfall is the part that can be dropped. At Bromo the car is swapped for a private jeep. Viewpoints first, then down onto the sea of sand, where the Pura Luhur Poten temple stands on the ash, and then the climb to the crater rim. Being private, the route is not fixed. Anything else in the same direction can be added or swapped in on the day.

Madakaripura Waterfall
The waterfall is reached by bike taxi as far as the entrance, then on foot. Expect to get wet, because there is no dry way in. If time is short, this is the stop that can be skipped.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
Swap the car for a private jeep. Viewpoints first, for the photographs and the view, then down onto the sea of sand and up the crater on foot. Going at this hour is what keeps the crowds off it.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
The walk to the crater passes Pura Luhur Poten temple, which is worth the detour. Then up to the rim, and back to the car afterwards.
