The day starts by driving up into the hills above Lake Arenal, to the Mistico bridges park at the top. The hike crosses 6 large bridges, some of them spanning up to 80 metres, and the height is the point: on those structures you are at eye level with the wildlife rather than looking up at it. A professional guide walks the trail with you. That takes about two and a half hours. Then a short drive to El Silencio Park, at the foot of Arenal, where the trail crosses the lava fields left by the 1968 eruption. Another hour and a half of walking ends with you standing at the base of the volcano. Lunch is at the rainforest cafe, with a choice of dishes. The day closes at the Relax Termalitas hot springs, in the same place: 6 pools, each at a different temperature, so you pick the heat that suits you.

  2. Arenal Hanging Bridges

The morning starts with a drive up into the mountains near Lake Arenal. At the top is the Mistico hanging bridges park, with wide views over the northern zone, the volcano and the lake. The hike crosses 6 large bridges, some of them spanning up to 80 metres. Being that high puts you level with the wildlife instead of underneath it, and the professional guide is there to find as much of it as possible. After about two and a half hours the bridges are behind you and the route moves closer to the volcano.

  3. Lake Arenal

A deep blue freshwater reservoir with jungle hills and pasture around it. On a clear day the cone of Arenal stands behind the water, which is the view the lake is known for. Rainforest canopy runs down to the shoreline, with water birds over it, and rainbows turn up often above the wind-rippled surface.

  4. Arenal Volcano National Park

A short drive brings the group up against the enormous lava fields deposited during the 1968 eruption. Standing this close is what gives you the scale of the volcano. About an hour and a half of walking there, then food at the rainforest cafe, with a choice of dishes. What is left is the hot spring pools. There are 6 of them, holding thermal water at a range of temperatures, so you can move between them. It is the usual point in the day when people compare notes on what they have seen.
