A long day out of Jaco to the northern plains of Costa Rica, covering three of the best known places in the area. La Fortuna Waterfall comes first, with a swim in the water at the bottom and rainforest on every side of it. At the base of Arenal the walk goes over the lava trails, with the cone itself in view on a clear day. The last stop is Paradise Hot Springs and Gardens, thermal mineral water at the foot of the volcano. Lunch is a typical Costa Rican meal, and dinner is served on the way back to Jaco.

  1. Jaco Beach

    Pick-up from centrally located hotels in Jaco and Hermosa Beach. The default start is 6:30 a.m., but the operator confirms the exact pick-up time and meeting point after booking. Automated booking emails may quote the default time. The operator's confirmation is the schedule that counts.

  2. La Fortuna Waterfall

    The drive north crosses the plains of Costa Rica and takes in three of the most visited places in the area. The first is La Fortuna Waterfall: a walk down to it, and a swim in the water at the bottom. A typical Costa Rican meal follows the swim.

  3. Mirador El Silencio

    A walk over the large lava flow left by the big eruption of 1968, with Arenal above it on a clear day and rainforest on either side. Some of the local wildlife shows itself along the way.

  4. Paradise Hot Springs

    After the volcano walk, the thermal mineral water of Paradise Hot Springs, with gardens of tropical vegetation around the pools. From there the road goes back to the Jaco area, and dinner is served en route.
