Arenal Full-Day Combo: Hike, Bridges, Waterfall & Hot Springs

One day, one vehicle, one bilingual guide who carries spotting equipment and uses it. The route strings together what people come to La Fortuna for, in one organised day. Nine hanging bridges open it, high and long, linked by two miles of trail through jungle at the level of the canopy, with Arenal standing behind them. El Silencio follows: stairs and trails climbing over the lava fields left by the 1968 eruption, up to a viewpoint that takes in the volcano, Lake Arenal, the jungle and the northern lowlands. The last leg is a rough three-mile drive to the Peñas Blancas viewpoint, where two waterfalls are visible across the canyon. One of them is the La Fortuna waterfall, and the trail goes down to it, crossing a high, narrow hanging bridge on the way. There are about 45 minutes at the pool to swim or sit. Lunch is at the ecological park by the Maleku village, where the community talks through its own history in the Palenque. Butterfly and frog gardens sit around the lunch area.

Red Lava's office, facing the Relax Termalitas hot springs.

  2. Arenal Hanging Bridges

Nine bridges, high and very long, linked by two miles of trail through thick jungle. The route runs at the level of the tree canopy, which is where most of the animals are, with Arenal standing behind it.

  3. Mirador El Silencio

This is the closest the day gets to the volcano. The hike starts at a wall of lava rock left by the mega eruption of 1968, then climbs stairs and trails across wide fields of lava, under the shadow of the mountain the whole way up. The viewpoint at the top takes in the volcano, Lake Arenal, the jungle around it and the northern lowlands. Coming down runs through more tropical forest, which is a second chance at the wildlife.

  4. La Fortuna Waterfall

A bumpy three-mile drive leads to the Peñas Blancas viewpoint, above a canyon under jungle. Two large waterfalls are visible from there: the Peñas Blancas fall and, further off, the La Fortuna waterfall, which is where the walk goes. The trail down crosses a high, narrow hanging bridge. At the bottom there are about 45 minutes at the pool, either swimming in the fresh water or sitting beside it. After the climb back up, the group stops at a village of the Maleku, where the community explains its history and culture inside the Palenque. Lunch is at the ecological park there, with butterfly and frog gardens around the eating area to walk through.
