Whakarewarewa and the Polynesian Spa from Auckland: Alkaline and Acidic Pools
A long day, and the numbers say so up front: Auckland to Rotorua is about three and a half hours each way. What is at the other end justifies the drive for most people who book it. First Whakarewarewa, a Māori village that people still live in. Steam comes up between the houses, mud pools bubble at the edge of the paths, and geysers go off on their own schedule. Local guides walk you through it and explain how the village uses the ground it sits on. Traditional song and dance are part of the visit. Then the Polynesian Spa on the shore of Lake Rotorua. What makes it unusual is that it draws two different waters. The alkaline springs are the soft ones, easy to sit in for a long time. The acidic springs are the other kind, and the two feel different on the skin. Both come from deep under the ground here. The pools look out over the lake and the forest behind it. There is a stop for lunch in Rotorua on the way through. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Auckland Central
The day leaves from New Zealand's largest city, with the guide setting up what is coming. Auckland to the Rotorua Māori village takes roughly three and a half hours.
Rotorua District
A drive through Rotorua, a town where Māori culture and geothermal ground sit on top of each other. The architecture is its own thing, and there is a quick stop for lunch along the way.
Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village
At Whakarewarewa you walk into a village people live in, with geothermal steam coming up through it. Local guides take you round: the traditions, the customs, and how daily life works here. Mud pools bubble, geysers spout, vents steam, and each has a story attached. Traditional song and dance are performed, and there is time with the people who live here to ask about their customs and their attachment to this ground.
Polynesian Spa
After the village, the Polynesian Spa. The pools are filled from geothermal springs drawn from deep underground, and there are two waters, not one: alkaline pools, which are the mild ones, and acidic springs, which feel entirely different. The view from the water is Lake Rotorua and the forest behind it.
Auckland
The drive back to Auckland, with the village and the spa behind you.
