Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Lake Rotomahana Tour

A full day out of the Tauranga port gates that puts the geothermal valley in the middle and fills the drive on either side. It starts along the coast: past Mount Maunganui and a stop at Mount Main Beach, white sand, surf, and Mauao standing over it. Then inland across the Kaituna River and south through Rotorua. Waimangu is the youngest geothermal valley in the world, because the eruption of Mount Tarawera made it in 1886. The guided walk runs an hour, downhill through steam, native bush and craters, past Frying Pan Lake, which is the largest hot spring on earth, and Inferno Crater with its colour. A shuttle covers the bottom of the valley to Lake Rotomahana, where a 45-minute boat cruise crosses the water. The commentary is the Tarawera eruption and the loss of the Pink and White Terraces, called the Eighth Wonder of the Natural World before the mountain buried them. Along the shoreline: steaming cliffs, springs, geysers and water spouting straight out of the bank. After Waimangu, the Wai-O-Tapu mud pools, which bubble and spit rather than sit still. On the way back, the Redwoods Forest of Californian trees, and a kiwifruit orchard at Paengaroa where the growing side of the Bay of Plenty gets explained. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

  1. 2 Salisbury Ave, Mount Maunganui

Meet at the WICKED WANDERS sign board, on the grassy mound opposite the port gates.

  2. Mount Maunganui

The day starts at the Tauranga port gates, drives past Mount Maunganui, and stops at Mount Main Beach: white sand, a surf coastline, and Mauao above it. Then inland, across the Kaituna River and south through Rotorua towards Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the youngest geothermal valley in the world, made by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.

  3. Waimangu Volcanic Valley

The valley starts with a guided walk of about an hour, downhill, through steam, native bush, craters and geothermal ground. Frying Pan Lake, the largest hot spring in the world, is on it, along with Inferno Crater and its colour, and the vents and terraces the eruption left. At the bottom, a short shuttle ride reaches Lake Rotomahana for a 45-minute boat cruise. The commentary covers the Tarawera eruption and the destruction of the Pink and White Terraces, which were called the Eighth Wonder of the Natural World before 1886. From the boat: steaming cliffs, springs, geysers and water spouting out of the shoreline itself.

  4. Rotorua District

South of Waimangu, the Wai-O-Tapu mud pools, where the mud boils and spits. The drive back stops at the Redwoods Forest, planted with Californian redwoods, and then at a kiwifruit orchard in Paengaroa, where the industry that runs on this soil gets explained. The day ends back at Tauranga Harbour.

  5. 2 Salisbury Ave, Mount Maunganui
