Waikoloa to Volcanoes: the Pu'u Huluhulu Kipuka and Saddle Road at 6,632 Feet
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Big Island of HawaiiThe Waikoloa departure of a day run by a small company a geologist started, with David, Grant and Kawika guiding. The order here puts Punalu'u Black Sand Beach first, on the Ka'u coast between Pahala and Naalehu, where the sand is black because the island keeps producing it, and Honu, the green sea turtles, come up onto it. The Kona coffee farm follows, 100% Kona and award-winning, with a tasting and a tour. Hilo gets driven through, and then the park, starting with lunch at the Rim Restaurant in the Volcano House, over the Kilauea caldera, followed by the whole Chain of Craters Road, summit to sea. Big Island Candies is worth the stop for what goes into it: Big Island macadamia nuts roasted fresh, and 100 percent Kona and Ka'u coffee from farms on this island, worked by hand as they have been for over 45 years. The drive back takes Saddle Road, Route 200, 55 miles through all four climates on the island. Just after mile 23 the road passes Pu'u Huluhulu, an old Mauna Kea cinder cone that younger flows have surrounded without covering. That is what makes it a kipuka: an island of older ground left standing inside newer lava. The high point of Saddle Road is here, 6,632 feet.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Punalu'u is the best known black sand beach in Hawaii, on the south-eastern Ka'u coast between Pahala and Naalehu. The island has white sand beaches and black sand beaches at the same time, because the volcanic activity that makes the black sand has never stopped. Coconut palms run along the top edge of it, and large Honu, Hawaiian green sea turtles, often lie out on the sand.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Lunch opens this part of the day, at the Rim Restaurant inside the historic Volcano House, with the Kilauea caldera below and the menu to choose from. The park protects geology, biology and cultural ground found nowhere else, and it contains the summits of the world's most active volcano. The route takes in the park and the full length of the Chain of Craters Road, from the summit down to the sea.
Big Island Candies
Big Island Candies has been making cookies, chocolates and confections by hand for over 45 years. What goes in is local: Big Island macadamia nuts, roasted fresh, and 100 percent Kona and Ka‘u coffee from farms on this island. The company is explicit that it takes no shortcuts on ingredients, and that the products are handled to reach customers in the condition they left in. The work is visible while you are there.
Saddle Road
Saddle Road, Route 200, runs 55 miles across the middle of the island and through all four of its climates: tropical forest, arid desert, grassland and mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23 there are lava flows with young vegetation and trees on them, and near the road the thickened lava has left the mounds that mark a flow slowing down. Just after mile 23 comes Puʻu Huluhulu, an older Mauna Kea cinder cone surrounded by younger lava flows, which is what makes it a kipuka. This is also close to the highest point on Saddle Road, 6,632 feet, about 1.25 miles of elevation. From here the road keeps going through hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity, towards Belt Road and the descent into Kona or Waikoloa.
