Volcano and Hilo Highlights in 6-7 Hours, Guided by Native Hawaiians
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Big Island of HawaiiSix to seven hours, with the stops chosen for what people actually come to see rather than for what fills a schedule. The guides are native Hawaiian, and that is the point of the day: the island explained by people from it, which is a different thing from the same facts read off a script. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park takes the largest share, with Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world. Steam vents, sulfur banks, lava tubes, the crater overlooks. Outside the park: waterfalls, black sand beaches, and the botanical gardens on Hilo Bay. The stops also get picked for where the viewing is best, which matters more than it sounds on an island where the same waterfall looks ordinary from one side and remarkable from another. Pick-up and drop-off are both included, and the vans are black 15-seaters marked Makaio Tours.

CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS: after leaving the ship you enter a large terminal building. A Hawaiian guide is inside with a Makaio Tours sign. If you have walked out of the building, you have gone past it. The van waits.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The largest part of the day. Every popular stop gets covered with commentary: Volcano House and the Visitor Center, the Kilauea overlook onto Halemaumau Crater, the steam vents, the sulfur dioxide banks, Kilauea Iki Crater, Laumanu Crater, and the Nahuku lava tube.
Hilo Farmers Market
Locally grown fruit and vegetables at the biggest market on the island, in historic Hilo town. An hour is set aside here for lunch, with restaurants and local shops all around.
Rainbow Falls
This waterfall runs off the Wailuku River in Hilo, and the rainbow shows up when the sun catches the mist under it. The planting around it is tropical and can be touched, and the banyan here spreads over a quarter of an acre: people climb it and swing from it.
Lili'uokalani Gardens
Lili'uokalani Gardens, 24 acres by Hilo Bay, historic, with eucalyptus and monkey pod trees among the island planting. The bridges cross saltwater tide pools with tropical fish in them, and nene, the state bird, are a common sight.
Big Island Candies
The candy factory, where the macadamia nut cookies get dipped in chocolate and can be sampled, along with free Kona or Kau coffee. The production floor is visible through large windows, from making to packing.
Richardson Ocean Park
Black sand, and honu, the Hawaiian green sea turtles, in the saltwater tide pools. Surfing, swimming and snorkelling all happen here, and there are coconut trees for anyone who would rather sit.
