Akaka Falls at 442 Feet, plus Hilo and a Self-Guided Volcanoes Explorer
Three packages in one day: 'Akaka Falls, the Hilo Discovery and the Volcanoes National Park Explorer. 'Akaka Falls drops 442 feet, 135 metres, into a gorge, inside a state park in dense rainforest just north of Hilo, on the Hamakua Coast. The Hilo half covers the historic town, with stops at Onomea Bay, Reed's Bay, Banyan Tree Drive, Richardson Ocean Park, Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, Rainbow Falls and the King Kamehameha statue. The Onomea Bay drive alone runs four miles along the coast, rainforest on one side and ocean on the other. In the park the visit is self-guided, which is worth knowing before booking. The driving covers Chain of Craters Road and Crater Rim Drive with scenic stops, and the sites you walk are the Kilauea Visitor Center, Halema'uma'u Crater from the Uekahuna lookout, Ha'akulamanu, the sulphur banks, the Kilauea Iki overlook and the Thurston Lava Tube. The company is locally owned and based on Hawai'i Island, and the commentary covers the stories and the language attached to these places, not only the geology. Custom and private tours can be arranged. Other pick-up points are available on request.
