Big Island Scenic Tour: Volcano Hilo Town Waterfall Beach & Lunch
Inside Thurston Lava Tube, a 600-foot cave created by lava flows.
Nahuku lava tube
Onomea Bay on the Old Mamalahoa Highway scenic drive.
Rainbow Falls in Hilo. Rainbows often appear in its mists.

The stop that separates this from every other Hilo day tour is Kawainui Falls, where the water comes out of a giant lava tube. The island's plumbing, made visible. Getting there means the Old Mamalahoa Highway on the Hamakua Coast, a winding road under tall trees with the ocean showing between them. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park covers the volcanic half: the caldera where Kilauea lives and erupts, an ancient lava tube to walk through, and steam vents you can feel the heat from. Rainbow Falls drops 80 feet off the Wailuku River, and on a sunny morning the rainbow appears in the mist. The banyan next to it is worth the photograph. In town: the Hilo Farmers Market, open seven days a week, with produce, local food and handmade work; the King Kamehameha statue, and what the chief who united the islands actually did; Lili'uokalani Gardens with its arched bridges and ponds; and Richardson's Beach, black sand, tide pools where green sea turtles gather, and time for a quick swim. Lunch is at a Hawaiian-style eatery, and cold drinks come with the day. Groups run to 13 people, the guides are local, and the minimum age is 5. Pick-up is available across the Hilo area, including the cruise terminal.

  1. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world, and the route goes to the massive caldera it lives in, which erupts often enough to have thrown lava in fountains. There is an ancient lava tube to walk through, steam vents whose heat you feel, and ground shaped by fire over time.

  2. Hilo

Lunch at a local restaurant, island-infused, which is the sort of place worth the stop on its own.

  3. Pepeekeo Scenic Drive

The winding Old Māmalahoa Highway, on the Hāmākua Coast, running under tall trees with ocean views between them. The stop here is Kawainui Falls, where the water comes out of a giant lava tube.

  4. Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is 80 feet high, in Hilo, fed by the Wailuku River. On a sunny morning the rainbow shows in the mist. The history and the legends of the river get told, and the huge banyan tree nearby is worth walking around.

  5. Hilo Farmers Market

The Hilo Farmers Market, in downtown Hilo, used by locals as much as by visitors. It runs seven days a week, and it has fresh produce, local treats and handmade crafts.

  6. King Kamehameha Statue

The King Kamehameha statue in Hilo honours the chief who united the Hawaiian islands. A short stop, with what his life and his legacy actually meant.

  7. Lili'uokalani Gardens

The largest authentic Edo-style garden outside Japan. Arched bridges, ponds, statues and tall banyan trees, and the quiet that goes with them.

  8. Richardson Ocean Park

Richardson's Beach is a quiet spot with black sand, looking out over Hilo Bay and the Hāmākua Coast. The tide pools are where the green sea turtles gather, and there is time for a quick swim.
