Two Hours Along the Coast Only Reachable by Sea: Caves, Cliffs, Priest Rock
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Sao MiguelTwo hours out of Rabo de Peixe, one of the working fishing harbours of the Azores, along a stretch of the north coast that has no road and no path. The cliffs are volcanic and they go up straight out of the water. Between them, caves cut into the rock. When the sea is calm enough the boat goes inside them, which is not something anyone expects the first time. Areal de Santa Bárbara comes first, the best-known surf beach in the Azores, seen from the water rather than from the sand. The crew have names for the rock formations that stand offshore, the Priest Rock and the Indian Rock among them, and a story for each. The run continues past Ponta do Cintrão and the hidden harbour at Santa Iria, and turns at Porto Formoso before heading back. The AG Expeditions kiosk is orange, with a flag at the entrance, next to the Nautical Club at the fishing harbour. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Porto de Pescas, R. do Porto, Rabo de Peixe
The AG Expeditions kiosk stands at Rabo de Peixe fishing harbour, next to the Nautical Club. It is orange, carries the AG Expeditions logo and has a flag at the entrance. The tour starts there.
Rabo de Peixe
One of the more distinctive fishing harbours in the Azores. Fishermen are working on their boats, sorting lines and landing the catch while you are still on the quay.
Praia do Areal de Santa Barbara
The best known surf beach in the Azores, which draws surfers to Ribeira Grande from everywhere. You do not land on it, and seeing it from the water is a view nobody on the sand gets.
Ponta da Cintrao
Ponta do Cintrão is a headland on the north coast: high cliffs, lava formations and open ocean, and one of the sharpest points on this side of the island.
Porto de Santa Iria
Santa Iria is a small harbour with clear water, once used by locals for fishing and for getting to sea. It sits below the Santa Iria cliffs and is quiet now.
Porto Formoso
Porto Formoso is a small fishing harbour in a bay, with calm water, painted boats, and the island's tea plantations just inland.
