Tongariro Crossing Shuttle from Turangi: Secure Parking, Mangatepopo to Ketetahi
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Tongariro National ParkThe Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one-way walk, which is the whole reason this service exists: the track starts at Mangatepopo off State Highway 47 and finishes at Ketetahi on SH46, and your car cannot be at both ends. This is the parking and the shuttle. You leave the vehicle in secure parking and get dropped at the start, one way. The operators are Māori, born and raised in Turangi Tongariro, and run the service from Lake Rotoaira. They hold Department of Conservation approval as a transport operator, which for a UNESCO area is the licence that matters. The walk is self-guided. Nobody accompanies you across, so the crossing is yours to judge and to pace. Two things come with the transfer that other shuttles do not have. A Māori blessing before you set off. And safety photography, taken free and posted to social media, which doubles as a record of who went onto the mountain that morning. The mountains you are among are Pihanga, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, taonga to the people driving you. The commentary on the way covers manaakitanga, the care of visitors, and kaitiakitanga, the guardianship of the place. Turangi itself is known for trout fishing, rafting and geothermal pools if the crossing leaves anything in your legs. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
