Tongariro Crossing Return Transfer from Turangi: 5.30am Out, 2.30pm Back
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Tongariro National ParkA round trip from Turangi to both ends of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, on a fixed clock. Be at the roadside for 5.20am so the van leaves at 5.30, and the afternoon pick-up is at 2.30pm. A late fee applies. That schedule is the thing to weigh before booking. It sets the pace of your day on the mountain, because the crossing has to fit between those two times. The operator says as much itself, and points anyone who wants to walk at their own speed towards its one-way transfer instead. That is an unusually straight piece of advice from a company selling the other product. The drive drops you at Mangatepopo Road, where the track starts, and collects from the Ketetahi platform at the far end, then returns you to where you were picked up in Turangi. The walk itself is self-guided. What comes with it: a Māori blessing, safety photography at no cost, the use of walking poles, and a cold drink at the finish. The operators were born and raised in Turangi Tongariro and hold UNESCO transport operator approval. The mountains around the track are Pihanga, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. On the way out the talk covers manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga, the care of visitors and the guardianship of the land. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
