Charco de los Clicos, the Timanfaya Geysers and Jameos del Agua

El Golfo is the first stop, about fifteen minutes of it, for the Charco de los Clicos, which people call the Green Lake. The colour comes from algae and sulphur in the water rather than from anything in the light. Almodóvar filmed part of Los abrazos rotos here, with Penélope Cruz. Timanfaya follows. Before going in there is an optional camel ride of thirty minutes, at extra cost and paid on the day. Inside, the Volcanoes Route runs between craters in ground that behaves like nowhere else on the island, and at Islote de Hilario the park staff spend about a quarter of an hour showing what the heat under the crust is still doing. Mancha Blanca is the lunch stop, an hour of free time at a traditional Canarian restaurant. The Iglesia de los Dolores is here too, dedicated to the island's patron saint. The last stop is the Jameos del Agua, one of César Manrique's works, built inside a volcanic tunnel and containing an auditorium, a restaurant and a swimming pool. Its lake is home to the blind crabs, which are found nowhere else. About fifty-five minutes here. Pickup is from the hotel, somewhere between 8:00 and 9:30 depending on the resort, and the day runs eight to ten hours from there. The confirmation comes with a map of the nearest pickup point.
