Grand Tour to Timanfaya and Jameos del Agua for cruise passengers

A day around Lanzarote built to fit a cruise call, with no queuing at the entrances. Jameos del Agua and Timanfaya are the two large stops. Between them the bus takes in the cliff at Mirador del Río with La Graciosa across the water, the vineyards of La Geria, the Casa-Museo del Campesino, the camel station and the Lago Verde. The guides cover the history behind each of César Manrique's buildings as the day goes on, and the island's culture around them. The meeting point is the police checkpoint at the port where the ship docks, where a guide waits with the company's sign.

What's included

  • Air-conditioned vehicle

The meeting point is the police checkpoint at the port where the cruise ship docks. A guide is there holding the company's sign.

  1. Jameos Del Agua

Thirty minutes from the port, the Jameos del Agua: the first of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centres César Manrique made, built inside a volcanic tunnel. It opened in 1968. What Manrique did with the space, as painter and sculptor both, was work with what the lava had already made rather than against it, and it is the clearest statement of what he believed art in a place should do.

  2. Mirador del Rio

Fifteen minutes on, the view over to La Graciosa from a cliff 500 metres away.

    Costo extra

  3. Casa Museo del Campesino

Another thirty minutes to the Casa-Museo del Campesino, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, at the geographical centre of Lanzarote. It is the work with which César Manrique acknowledged the island's farmers. From the bus you see the Monumento a la Fecundidad, also called the Monumento al Campesino. More than 15 metres of it, made by Manrique with the master Jesús Soto out of old ship water tanks, iron and concrete put together, and it has become one of the island's emblems.

  4. La Geria

Ten minutes to La Geria, where the vineyards are. The ground is arid and volcanic, which is not where wine usually comes from, and the quality of the wine is a surprise every time. The stop is at a winery, with a small tasting.

  5. After another 10 minutes' drive

Ten minutes more to the camel camp. A 20-minute ride on one costs extra and is optional. If you would rather not, there is a small museum on the history of the camels on Lanzarote.

    Costo extra

  6. Timanfaya National Park

Ten minutes to the Fire Mountains, left by the eruptions in the south of Lanzarote in the 18th and 19th centuries: red craters, lava flows, and ground with nothing growing on it. The 200 kilometres they cover are part of the Timanfaya National Park. The eruption ran for six years, from 1730 to 1736, and between the volume of material it threw out and that duration it counts among the largest volcanic episodes in the world.

  7. El Lago Verde / Charco de los Clicos

The last stop, 20 minutes away, is the Lago Verde, sitting inside a volcanic crater and one of the most visited places on Lanzarote. From there it is 30 minutes back to the harbour.
