Te Puia and Pōhutu Geyser from Tauranga: Haka, the Carving School and a Kiwi House
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
TaurangaSix hours from the Tauranga port gates, weighted towards Te Puia rather than spread thin across the region. The drive out goes past Mount Maunganui with a stop at Mount Main Beach, golden sand under Mauao, then inland over the Kaituna River and south through the Bay of Plenty to Rotorua. In town, Sulphur Point for the view across Lake Rotorua, then the Government Gardens and Rachel Spring, whose mineral water is the reason Rotorua became a spa town in the first place. Te Puia holds the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. The cultural performance is waiata, poi and haka, presented by Te Arawa, whose ground this is. The national carving school is on site, where the wood carving tradition is taught rather than displayed. The Kiwi House keeps a nocturnal enclosure, which is the only realistic way to see a kiwi awake. The valley itself has mud pools, steaming vents and silica formations, and ends at the Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, which erupts regularly through the day. After time for souvenirs, the return stops at the Redwoods Forest and at a kiwifruit orchard in Paengaroa. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

2 Salisbury Ave, Mount Maunganui
The WICKED WANDERS sign board, on the grassy mound across from the port gates, is the meeting point.
Mount Maunganui
From the Tauranga port gates, past Mount Maunganui and a stop at Mount Main Beach: golden sand, surf coast, and Mauao above it. Inland from there, across the Kaituna River and south through the Bay of Plenty countryside to Rotorua. In Rotorua the first stop is Sulphur Point, for the view over the lake and a first look at the geothermal ground. Then the Government Gardens, and Rachel Spring, whose therapeutic mineral water sits at the origin of the town's spa history.
Te Puia
Te Puia holds the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. The cultural performance is waiata, poi and haka, given by Te Arawa, whose living traditions these are. The guided part covers the national carving school, where master carvers keep traditional Māori wood carving in practice, and the Kiwi House, whose nocturnal enclosure makes it possible to see the bird awake. Then the geothermal valley: mud pools, steaming vents, silica formations, and at the end of it the Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, which erupts high and often.
Rotorua District
After time for souvenirs, the return journey stops at the Redwoods Forest and its Californian redwoods. Closer to Tauranga, a kiwifruit orchard at Paengaroa explains one of the country's biggest horticultural industries and the ground that made it work. The day finishes back at Tauranga Harbour.
