The whole pitch here is the hour of departure. Leaving early puts you on the mountain before the crowd and before the heat, which on a volcano with no shade is not a small thing, and it is when the sky is most likely to be clear. The walk is four hours there and back, graded moderate, through cloud forest and then volcanic ground. The guide is a bilingual local one and covers the geology and the history along the way. The summit is what people come for: an emerald green crater lake, an active crater underfoot, and the view running out across El Salvador. Afterwards, a restaurant ten minutes from the base of the volcano, with the panorama of Lake Coatepeque, itself a crater lake left by old volcanic activity. Groups are kept small. Finding your guide is straightforward enough: they are always in a Tunco Life T-shirt, at the hotel reception, or in front of Point Break Cafe if you are meeting at Tunco Town Plaza.

  1. Santa Ana Volcano

A moderate four-hour round trip to the summit of the highest volcano in El Salvador, with the emerald green crater lake at close range. The trail winds through cloud forest and then volcanic ground, with local guides who cover the geology of the volcano and its history as you climb. At the top there is an active crater under your feet and a view that runs a long way across the country, which is why the photographers on the tour tend to slow everyone down.

  2. Lake Coatepeque

After the hike, a local restaurant ten minutes from the base of the volcano. Lunch is eaten in front of one of the best views of Lake Coatepeque, a crater lake left by old volcanic activity, deep blue and usually quiet.
