3 Days Tour in Mount Rinjani Summit with Lake Hiking

Three days from Sembalun over the summit to Senaru, and the pick-up is at four in the morning, adjusted for where your hotel is. That means being on Lombok at least the night before. The package is written for experienced trekkers. Complete beginners are taken as well, but only on the private version, which is a distinction worth reading before booking the group departure. What it covers: the Sembalun crater rim, the summit at 3,726 m, Segara Anak lake, the hot springs, and the Senaru crater rim on the way out. Two details separate it from the other three-day listings. The first is administrative and useful. At Sembalun you are given your medical card and the QR code for your trekking pass before registration at the national park office, so the paperwork is handled rather than left to you. The second is what you see at the top. At sunrise the view runs across the Wallace Line, the boundary Wallace drew between Asian and Australian species, to Bali and Mount Agung, with Sumbawa the other way. The descent from there follows a ridge covered in edelweiss, which Indonesian calls bunga abadi, the everlasting flower. Bookings are final and cancellations are not refunded.

Itinerary

  1. Senaru Village

The driver collects you from the hotel lobby, at a time set by where the hotel is, and drives straight to Senaru village. Check-in at the office, breakfast, then the guide and crew for the trekking briefing.

  2. Sembalun Village

Forty-five minutes by road to Sembalun village. Your medical card and the QR code for the trekking pass are issued here. Check-in at the national park registration office, and the walking starts.

  3. The trek at sembalun will start with the gentle ascend…

The Sembalun side starts gently: through the village, past farmland, then out onto the open savanna that local families graze cattle on. The hills of Sembalun on one side, the bulk of Rinjani ahead. Two hours from the gate to Post I, the rest area at Pemantauan, 1,300 m. Under an hour more to Post II, Tengengean, 1,800 m, which is the lunch point, and the view is the reason lunch is taken there. Post III, Padabalong, is another hour and a half. Then three to three and a half hours of steep trail through cemara forest, the Casuarina pines, before the camp at Pelawangan on the Sembalun crater rim at 2,639 m. Arrival is planned before sunset, so there is time for coffee or tea and the light going while the crew cook dinner.

  4. Mount Rinjani

Ready at 2 a.m. for the summit. Three to three and a half hours of climbing to 3,726 m. At sunrise the view runs across the Wallace Line to Bali and Mount Agung, with Sumbawa the other way. About an hour up there for photographs, then back down. The way off the ridge passes stands of edelweiss, bunga abadi in Indonesian, and ends at camp for breakfast.

  5. Segara Anak Lake

After breakfast, the descent to Segara Anak lake: two to two and a half hours, with the valley below and Mount Sangkareang standing to the west of the national park. At the lake the porters start on lunch while the guide takes you to the hot springs. Swimming, then sitting in water that is held locally to have healing power, which is what puts the legs back before the next climb. Lunch by the lake between 12:00 and 13:00, with Mount Baru, the active volcano in the middle of the water, in front of you while you eat.

  6. About 14

Around 14:00 the walk leaves the lake and climbs two to three hours to the second camp on the Senaru crater rim, planned to arrive before sunset. This rim looks at the lake from the opposite side to the summit, and from here the whole of it is visible at once, with Mount Baru in the middle. Depending on pace and weather, dinner and sunset may coincide.

  7. Senaru Village

After breakfast, the descent to Senaru village at 601 m, with rest stops on the way and, in normal conditions, lunch prepared at Post 1 Extra. Six hours from the crater rim, the trek ends at the Rinjani Trekking Center office in Senaru, where a car is waiting to take you on to wherever you are going next.
