Park at the Finish: Ketetahi Carpark and a One-Way Lift to the Tongariro Start
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Tongariro National ParkThe problem with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not the walk, it is the car. The track starts in one place and ends somewhere else entirely, and every shuttle arrangement is an answer to that. This one parks you at the end. You leave the car in the secure lot on State Highway 46 at the Ketetahi road end, the only such facility there, and the transfer takes you round to Mangatepopo, where the track begins. What that buys is time that is yours. Fast walkers do not sit around for hours waiting for a pick-up. Slow ones do not spend the last descent worrying about missing it. There is no return shuttle to catch, because the car is already at the finish. One detail to plan for: the track ends at the four-hour Ketetahi car park, and from there it is another 900 metres on foot to the private lot where you left the vehicle. National Park Shuttles is the Manawhenua operator based in Waimarino, and states plainly that nobody is left behind. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
