Big Island GOAT Experience: Mauna Kea Summit, Sunset & Stars

The summit of Mauna Kea is the highest point in the Pacific, and the sunset from it is the reason most people book. What stands around you up there is the largest collection of research telescopes in the world. Two of the eight that produced the first images of a black hole are on this mountain. The guide covers the history of the Big Island on the way up. After dark comes the star show, run privately for your group, with a hot drink in hand. A professional Celestron telescope gets pointed at the planets, weather permitting, and a laser pointer is used to trace the sky. The part most tours do not have: the guide takes astrophotography shots of you with the company's DSLR and emails them afterwards. A usable photograph of yourself under that sky needs a camera you probably did not bring. Transport is a comfortable 4x4 passenger van. Jackets and gloves are provided, and you will want them, because the summit is cold in a way the coast never suggests. Mauna Kea is a sacred place, the home of the goddess Poli'ahu, and the guides treat it as one.

  1. Mauna Kea Summit

One of the best places anywhere for sunset and for stargazing, on what is, measured from its base on the sea floor, the tallest mountain on earth. Transport is a comfortable 4x4 passenger van, and jackets and gloves are provided to keep you warm. The guide covers the history of the place and traces the night sky with a laser pointer. A professional Celestron telescope brings the stars closer, and a DSLR camera is used to get a photograph of you under them.

  2. Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural…

Maunakea holds a particular place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i. It is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu, and it is associated with the deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was the realm of the gods, and in ancient times it was kapu, forbidden to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Hawaiian ali'i, royalty, would occasionally make the long climb. The last royal visitor was Queen Emma, in 1881, who led her companions on the arduous six-hour journey to the top to see the summit and to renew herself in the sacred Lake Waiau. The White Mountain, and the legends of Poli'ahu, belong to it as much as the observatories do. Today there are 13 international observatories on Maunakea and thousands of visitors a year, and it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. On the fourth Saturday of each month the MKVIS hosts community speakers on Mauna O Wakea from a cultural point of view.
