Lava Show Vik: Watch It Flow, Hear It Sizzle, Feel the Heat
The first show of its kind anywhere, and still the only one: red-hot molten lava, at close range, in a room built to make that safe. Three things happen at once, and they are the reason it works. You watch the lava move, which is slower and heavier than most people expect. You hear it, because lava sizzles against the surfaces it is poured onto. And you feel the heat come off it from where you are sitting. The show has collected a number of awards, for the innovation in it and for what it teaches. What it explains is what an eruption does at the scale of a room, which is the only scale at which most people will ever be near one. This is the Vík venue.
