The operator's most booked glacier hike, and it works for people who have never been on ice. The guides are certified, the crampons go on before you step out, and what you walk among are the features a glacier makes as it moves: deep crevasses, ice ridges, sinkholes, and moulins, the vertical shafts meltwater carves straight down into the ice. None of them stay the same from one season to the next, because the glacier does not. The distinction the operator draws is a fair one: the time is spent on the glacier rather than looking at it from the edge. That is what separates a hike from a viewpoint. The gear is good, the groups are small, and the explanation covers how glaciers have shaped the ground the rest of Iceland stands on. The base is the Sólheimajökull car park, 2.5 hours from Reykjavík: Road 1 along the South Coast, then left onto Road 221, and about five minutes more.
