Kona to Volcanoes with a Geologist's Company: Lunch at the Rim, Saddle Road Home
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Big Island of HawaiiA small company founded by a geologist, which shows in what the day spends its time on. The guides are David, Grant and Kawika. The first stop is a 100% Kona coffee farm that has won awards for it, with access, a tour and a tasting. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach comes next, on the Ka'u coast between Pahala and Naalehu. The sand is jet black because the island keeps making it, coconut palms line the top of it, and Honu, Hawaiian green sea turtles, often haul out on the sand. Lunch is at the Rim Restaurant in the historic Volcano House, chosen from the menu, looking into the Kilauea caldera. Then the park: the whole Chain of Craters Road, summit to sea. The return is by Saddle Road, Route 200, 55 miles across the middle of the island, through all four of its climates. Tropical forest, dry desert, grassland, and fog at the top. Between miles 19 and 23 there are lava flows with young trees taking hold on them. Just past Saddlehouse Road the ridges mark where a 1936 flow finally stopped, two miles short, and near the road you can see the mounds lava leaves when it slows. Big Island Candies has been making its cookies and chocolates by hand for over 45 years, and there is a stop there, plus a drive through historic Hilo.

Heavenly Hawaiian Kona Coffee Farm Tours & Konalani Coffee Bar
An award-winning 100% Kona coffee farm, with exclusive access, a tasting and a tour.
Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Black sand exists here because the volcanic activity never stops, and the island has both white and black beaches because of it. Punalu'u sits on the south-eastern Ka'u coast, between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu, and it is the best known of the black sand beaches in Hawaii. Coconut palms line the top edge of the sand, and large Honu, Hawaiian green sea turtles, often bask on it.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The park visit starts with lunch at the Rim Restaurant, in the historic Volcano House, over the Kilauea caldera, chosen from the menu. Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects geological, biological and cultural ground that exists nowhere else, and it takes in the summits of the world's most active volcano. The route covers the park and the entire Chain of Craters Road, from summit to sea.
Saddle Road
Saddle Road is one of the more spectacular drives anywhere: 55 miles, Route 200, across all four of the island's climates, tropical forest, arid desert, grassland and mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23 there are lava flows with young vegetation and trees on them. Just past Saddlehouse Road, the ridges show where a 1936 flow slowly came to a stop, two miles away, and near the road the thickened lava has left the mounds that mark a flow losing speed. From there the road carries on through hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity, towards Belt Road and the descent into Kona or Waikoloa.
Big Island Candies
Big Island Candies has been making its cookies, chocolates and confections by hand for over 45 years, with the ingredients to match. The work is visible while you are there.
