Haleakala Sunrise Ride: 20 Miles Down and the Switchbacks Twice
Sunrise at the top of Haleakala, then 20 miles of descending, and the switchbacks are ridden twice rather than once. That repetition is what separates this from the shorter Bike Maui rides. The switchbacks below the park get ridden, then ridden again, before the shuttle carries the group down to Makawao, where the last stretch of riding to Haiku begins. Entry to Haleakala National Park is included, along with NAI certified guides, custom KONA mountain bikes, DAKINE backpacks, Helly Hansen rain gear and Bell helmets. What to bring: closed-toe shoes, layers, a sweatshirt or jacket, a knit cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, snacks and a camera. The summit before dawn is genuinely cold, so the hat matters more here than on the daytime rides. Riders must be 12 or older, over 4'10", under 270 lb, with recent riding experience and the fitness for the distance. Not for anyone pregnant or on medication that causes drowsiness. Closed-toe shoes are required. Meet at the shop in the historic Haiku Marketplace, 810 Haiku Road. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
