Haleakala Sunrise by Vehicle: Lavender Farms, Hitching Rails and No Bicycle
First, the thing the operator puts at the top of its own listing: this is not a bike tour. Haleakala EcoTours is the sister company of Bike Maui, and people book the wrong one. Here you ride in a vehicle, up and back down. Sunrise from the summit, then a guided run through Haleakala National Park and Upcountry Maui with NAI certified interpretive guides, who cover the geology and the ecology inside the park and the history of the island on the way. Kula sits on the mountain in cool air and volcanic soil, which is why lavender, protea and macadamia farms are there, on pasture that has been ranched for generations. Makawao is paniolo country. The hitching rails are still outside the shops, from when people arrived on horseback and needed somewhere to tie up. Pa'ia is a surf town now. It was built by the sugar plantations, and the guides explain what that did to the north shore and to the island's culture. The view from the top takes in the dormant crater and both coasts of Maui at once. Meet at the Kahului Park & Ride. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Kahului
The Kahului Park & Ride.
Haleakala Crater
Sunrise from the top of Haleakala, on a guided vehicle tour of the National Park and the Upcountry. NAI certified interpretive guides handle the culture and history of Maui on the way up, and the geology and ecology of the area once inside the park. After sunrise there is time in the historic towns of Makawao and Pa'ia.
Haleakala National Park
An informative run through Upcountry Maui and Haleakala National Park to the summit, with the dormant crater on one side and both coasts of the island in view.
Kula
The pastures along the mountainside are what is left of Maui's farming and ranching history. Kula's cool air and volcanic soil suit lavender, protea and macadamia, and there are farms of all three.
Makawao
Makawao is where the paniolo, the Hawaiian cowboys, put down roots. The hitching rails are still outside the shops, where people once tied up their horses.
Paia
Pa'ia is a surf town today, but the sugar plantations made it. The guides cover what that did to the island's culture, and how this small north shore town became a place people came to for entertainment.
