Haleakala Express: 15 Miles Down to Haiku, No Stops Built In

The Express is the plain version: 6,500 feet down to sea level, 15 miles, finishing in the North Shore town of Haiku. Nothing is scheduled along the way, which is the appeal for anyone who came to ride rather than to browse. What comes with the booking: NAI certified guides, KONA mountain bikes, DAKINE backpacks, Helly Hansen rain gear and Bell helmets. Bring closed-toe shoes, a sweatshirt or jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, a snack and a camera. The restrictions are strict and worth reading before you pay. Riders must be 15 or older, taller than 4'10", under 270 lb, physically up to a long outdoor descent, and must have ridden a bike recently. Anyone pregnant, or on medication that causes drowsiness, cannot ride. Closed-toe shoes are required, not suggested. Every rider has to understand and acknowledge the risks involved.
