Etna Sunset with Dinner Facing the 1985 and 2002 Lava Flows
Half a day, built around a two-hour trek and the half hour that follows it. The first stop is the Silvestri craters on the southern side of the volcano, thrown up by the eruption of 1892. From there the walking runs about two hours on a path across ancient flows, with volcanic ground open on both sides. A lava flow cave comes next, entered with torches and helmets. The last stop is where the timing pays off: an equipped area looking at the 1985 and 2002 flows, with a light meal, and half an hour set aside to watch the sun go down before the drive back to the hotel. Nothing else is scheduled during that half hour, which is the point of it.
