Half a day on Etna, timed so that the last stage is the sunset. Pick-up is at the meeting point you choose, and the vehicle is a jeep or a van. The road up runs past the dormant craters on the flank, with the Valle del Bove opening on the eastern side, a large basin cut into the body of the volcano. The guide covers what Etna is doing and how this ground came to look the way it does. One stop goes into older explosive terrain: either the Hornitos or a lava flow cave, which is entered with a helmet and a torch provided for it. Zafferana Etnea supplies the food. Honey, wine and typical Sicilian products are tasted along the way. The final climb reaches 2,000 metres, and that is where the group stops, with the sun going down over the black ground of the upper slopes.

  5. "In Zafferana the air is good for the lips

"In Zafferana the air is good for the lips, it smells of fresh baked bread, of broom. And from up there, from the three thousand meters of Etna, Sicily is a three-pointed star in the upside-down sky of its ancient sea."
