Etna Summit Craters at 2,900 m, a Lava Cave and Alcantara, from Taormina
The high one. This day gets you to the base of the summit craters, at 2,900 metres. The ascent happens one of two ways, depending on which side the day uses: cableway and off-road vehicles on the south-east of Etna, off-road vehicles alone on the north-east. At the top the walking is easy, along the base of the summit craters, with a naturalist expert and a volcanological guide. The ground up there is ash and broken rock, and the craters above you are the active ones. After the summit comes one of Etna's volcanic caves, so the same day covers the mountain above and below its own surface. Lunch is on local typical products, and the afternoon is the Alcantara Gorges. Groups are small, and the day starts at Porta Catania in Taormina, with pick-up at your accommodation or an agreed point in town.
