From Piano Provenzana at 1,800 m, special 4x4 vehicles climb to 2,825 m at Piano delle Concazze. The operator's position is that the north is the slope which currently allows the summit to be reached in safe conditions. From the Concazze the ascent takes about two hours, up to the main crater rim at 3,320 m. The route walks the edge of the Central Crater, faces the North-East Crater, which drops away sharply, and passes alongside the South-East Crater, the one responsible for the most recent and most impressive eruptions. What you notice up there beyond the scale: gas coming out of the ground, volcanic bombs lying where they landed, and colours in the rock produced by sublimation, sulphur above all, which is what puts colour into otherwise black ground. The descent runs through fine ash and scoria and stays panoramic the whole way, with the Sicilian coast below. The guide stops along it to explain how the volcano formed and what makes it behave as it does. Back at 2,825 m the 4x4 returns the group to Piano Provenzana.

  3. Itinerario Crateri Sommitali

From Piano Provenzana at 1,800 m on the north side, special 4x4 vehicles climb through the typical Etna ground to about 2,825 m, near Piano delle Concazze. The ascent from there takes around two hours and reaches the main crater rim at 3,320 m. The route runs along the edge of the Central Crater, faces the North-East Crater, which falls away vertiginously, and passes the South-East Crater, the one behind the most recent and most impressive eruptions.

  4. Piano Provenzana

Beyond the size of the summit craters, what stands out is the environment: gas emissions, volcanic bombs, and colours in the ground produced by the sublimation of various elements, sulphur in particular. The descent goes through fine volcanic ash and slag and stays panoramic throughout, with the Sicilian coast in view. The guide breaks the route with stops to explain the history of the volcano, how it formed and what makes it particular. Back at 2,825 m the 4x4 takes the group down to Piano Provenzana.
