Etna Craters at 3,000 m: Where the 2021 Lava Buried the 1971 Cone
The trekking crosses ground that is recent by any measure: lava emitted during the winter and spring of 2021, still raw underfoot. It heads for what used to be the small explosive cone of the 1971 eruption. That cone is no longer there. The 2021 flows covered it, and the walk now starts from the spot where it stood, which is a fair summary of how quickly this mountain rewrites itself. The guides are volcanologists, and the subject is the places and the workings of the highest volcano in Europe. The group meets at 10:30 inside the Bar Esagonal at the Piazzale Funivia, near the Rifugio Sapienza, and leaves at 11:00.

Mount Etna
The trekking starts here and crosses the lunar ground made by the lava flows of winter and spring 2021, heading for the area of the small explosive cone thrown up in 1971. That cone vanished under the 2021 lava, which is why the walk now begins from this point rather than at it. What opens up from there is the highest volcano in Europe at its most spectacular.
