A morning that fits three eruptions into one walk, each of them dated. Pick-up is wherever it was agreed. The first stop is a lava flow cave, entered with a helmet and a torch, then ten minutes at a bar before going higher. The walking is a light trek of about two hours at 2,000 metres, on the south side, around the Silvestri Craters. Those craters opened in the 1892 eruption. The flows crossed on the way are from 2001 and 2002, the most destructive of the last fifty years, and the ground still shows which is which: bare rock where the recent flow ran, older craters standing beside it. The morning closes with a tasting of typical Sicilian products and a light lunch, then the drive back to Catania. The altitude does most of the work here. Two hours of easy walking at 2,000 metres is enough to cross ground laid down in 1892, in 2001 and in 2002.
