Etna in the Afternoon: Cooler, Emptier, and Sunset over the South Slope
The argument for the afternoon slot is the first thing the operator says about it: the volcano is cooler then, and there are fewer people on it. Both matter in high summer. The walking is on the southern slope, up to 2,000 metres, with a naturalist guide. A cave of volcanic origin is part of the route, and the equipment to enter it is provided and already covered by the price. The sunset is what the timing is built around. It comes with a meal of typical Sicilian products, water and red Etna wine, eaten outdoors while the light goes off the mountain. In winter the temperature makes eating outside unreasonable, so it becomes a snack in a chalet instead, with pizza or local products. The tour runs in Italian and English, and in French or Spanish on request. It starts from the office at Piazza Federico di Svevia 32.
