Etna at Sunset: the 10,000-Year-Old Caldera and Houses Ringed by Lava
A spring and summer departure, timed so the light on the volcano is the last of the day. The route covers ancient craters and lava flows, the lunar ground around them and the forest that survives lower down. One detail stays with people longer than the craters do: the houses left standing with lava all around them. A naturalist guide goes with the group and explains the volcanic processes as they appear, in plain terms rather than technical ones. Volcanic caves are part of the route, and the tasting of typical Etna products is free.

Craters Silvestri of Mount Etna
The naturalist guides explain, in clear and simple terms, the volcanological processes that produced these places. What you see: the lunar ground around the Silvestri craters, and the semi-desert of the volcanic caldera called the Valle del Bove, the Valley of the Ox.
Valle Del Bove
The Valley of the Ox opens out as a single immense expanse. It is an ancient volcanic caldera, formed 10,000 years ago.
Colata Lavica 1992
Lava flows of different ages line the route, along with volcanic bombs, craters and several lateral craters, all of it evidence of how continuously Etna has worked across the centuries. The walk goes between older craters and newer ones, crosses the ground covered by the 1991-93 eruption, and reaches the Sapienza Refuge at 2,000 metres.
Oro d'Etna
The first stop is in the municipality of Zafferana Etnea, at a certified farm, where a tasting of typical products is offered.
Mount Etna
A spectacular lava cave comes next. The guides take you in, with the helmet and torches needed to do it safely handed out first.
