A full circuit of the island in one day, in a Mercedes Sprinter, with lunch, bottled water and snacks included so the day does not stop for logistics. The first stop is the Kona Coffee Living History Farm at Captain Cook, which is a working museum: interpreters in period costume demonstrate how coffee was farmed here, and the growing, harvesting and processing get shown rather than described. Then the Punalu'u Bake Shop, the southernmost bakery in the United States, for sweetbread and malasadas, and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach at Pahala, where green sea turtles sunbathe on volcanic sand under coconut palms. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park holds both Kilauea and Mauna Loa. There are lava tubes to walk through and craters still steaming. Rainbow Falls sits inside Wailuku River State Park, 80 feet high, with ancient lava caves and banyan trees around it, and the rainbows appear in the morning light. 'Akaka Falls drops 442 feet into a gorge, and the loop trail to see it is paved, which makes it one of the few waterfalls of that size on the island most people can actually reach. Big Island Candies closes the circuit, with the cookies hand-dipped in front of you. An expert guide covers the history, the culture and the geology on the way round.
