Acatenango with Pachamama: the Short Route, Cabins for Six, Fuego at 200 Metres
The route is shorter than the standard one and used by only a few agencies. It skips the most punishing section, so you reach base camp with something left, which matters if you plan to add the Fuego walk in the afternoon. The day starts at the office at 7:30, where the gear is handed out: jackets, gloves, hats, and the briefing. Snacks, extra gear and porters can be bought. The shared minibus to La Soledad takes 45 to 60 minutes. At base camp, each group hands the guide one litre of water for making the hot drinks. The cabins are new, sleep up to six, come with sleeping bags, and have glass doors facing the volcano. Evening is the fire, hot chocolate and dinner. The guides speak basic English; a bilingual guide costs extra. The Fuego walk is an option, leaving at 4 PM: three and a half hours there and back, to a point 200 metres from the eruptions at 3,768 m, with half an hour to watch them. It is a hard walk and needs water, a jacket and a headlamp. Nobody is allowed to approach Fuego alone, and doing it ends the trip for everyone. The summit at 4:00 AM is also optional, and collective: at least half the group has to want it, or it does not happen, and that policy is not changed for individuals. A private guide can be arranged instead. Weather and safety decide the rest. The summit stop is about 45 minutes, then breakfast at camp and the descent, with Antigua reached around noon. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
