Acatenango with CA Travelers: Cabins for Four, -6°C Bags, Guides from San José Calderas
The camp is the part to compare. The cabins sleep four and come made up: a pillow, a sleeping bag rated to -6 °C, an extra blanket, a mattress of 12 cm, and a waterproof carpet under the whole tent so the cold does not come up from the ground. The guides are a local cooperative, CAT, the Comité de Autogestión Turística, made up of people from the community of San José Calderas in Chimaltenango. The day runs to a clock. Breakfast at CA Travelers at 7:15, with six options. Pick-up at 8:00 to the supply centre, where the kit is handed out and there is a storage room for what you leave behind. The shuttle leaves at 9:30 and takes 45 minutes. The walk starts at 10:30, lunch is at 1:30 after the first two hours, with 45 minutes to recover, and camp is reached at 4:00, where the guides make Guatemalan hot chocolate. Sunset is at 5:00. Dinner at 7:00, and after that you can sleep or sit up watching Fuego, the twin volcano that erupts through the night in front of the camp. On a clear one, Pacaya and Agua are visible too. The summit takes an hour and a half in the morning, for sunrise. Breakfast back at camp, then two and a half hours down. At the supply centre the equipment goes back and the staff have a smoothie waiting, then the drive to your hostel in Antigua. All sales are final. No refund is available for cancellations.
