Mount St Helens with the Hummocks: Pieces of the Mountain That Travelled Miles
The 1980 eruption moved parts of Mount St Helens for miles. They are still where they landed, and the Hummocks Trail walks among them beside the Toutle River, which is the stop that makes the scale of what happened land. Evergreen Escapes runs the day with a maximum of ten people and guides who have been rated Certified Excellent every year since 2010. The Eruption Trail goes into the blast zone itself, with the crater in view and the ecosystems that have come back since. Roosevelt elk move through this country in herds, and groups do see them. Other stops on a typical day: the Billy Frank Jr Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, which is a serious birding site; old growth forest at Lewis and Clark State Park; the boardwalk at Coldwater Lake; the visitor centre above Silver Lake; and the Science and Learning Center above Coldwater. The itinerary printed anywhere is a sample. The guides build the day around the conditions. This is deliberately not a driving tour. The operator says it prefers to have guests out of the vehicle and walking. Lunch is included: local, organic and served family style, outdoors when the weather allows. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
