Guests staying on Oahu can see the Big Island without changing hotel. The return interisland flight between Honolulu and Hilo is part of the booking, transfers run from Waikiki hotels, and a guide takes the group through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for the rest of the day. Kilauea is the reason to come. It is among the most active volcanoes on Earth and has erupted repeatedly in recent years, though nothing about an eruption can be promised on any given day. The drive down Chain of Craters Road covers 18.3 miles of ground that lava has already rearranged: steam rising through cracks in the rock, craters at the roadside, a petroglyph field, and the point where the road stops because a flow crossed it on the way to the sea. The group is small, and the day does not end at the park boundary. Hilo adds the shoreline where green sea turtles rest on black sand, a waterfall dropping over a lava cave, and a farmers market in the old downtown. The flights need passenger details. Send the full name in English, gender, and date of birth (MM/DD/YYYY) for every traveller as soon as the booking is made.

  1. 2450 Kekuanaoa St, Hilo

Tour bus pick-up point, in the group tour area next to Baggage Claim D.

  2. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park runs to about 230,000 acres and holds two of the most active volcanoes on the planet: Mauna Loa at 4,170 metres and Kilauea at 1,247 metres. That pairing is what makes the park one of the natural sites people plan whole trips around, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Sightseeing inside the park takes roughly 2 hours and covers stops 2 to 8 below, in that order.

  3. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet…

Kilauea has erupted often in recent years and belongs to the largest active volcanic system in the world. What you see depends on the day: activity where there is any, and in every case the rare geological formations left behind by the last time the mountain moved. The viewpoint is inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Eruptions cannot be guaranteed and may not happen during the visit.

  4. A steam vent is a spot where hot steam rises from the…

A steam vent is a crack opened by volcanic activity, with hot steam coming up through it straight out of the ground. Standing beside one, the geothermal heat is the first thing you notice, before the steam itself. Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

  5. Volcano House is a historic hotel offering a spectacular…

Volcano House is a hotel with some history behind it and a close view down into the Kilauea crater. You do not have to be a guest to walk in: the lodge and its restaurant are open to anyone who wants the view, a photograph, and somewhere to sit for a while. People stop here for the atmosphere as much as the scenery. Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

  6. Chain of Craters Road

Chain of Craters Road runs 18.3 miles (31 km) down the east rift and the coastal section of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It starts up in the lava zone, passes a large petroglyph field on the way down, and ends at the coast at the point where a lava flow crossed the road on its way into the sea.

  7. Pauahi Crater

Pauahi Crater sits along Chain of Craters Road inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Relatively recent activity built a sharply defined cinder cone here out of red and black ash and lava fragments. Vegetation is thin on the ground and the views run a long way at this elevation, which leaves the place looking like nowhere else on the island.

  8. Kealakomo Overlook is a coastal viewpoint located midway…

Kealakomo Overlook is halfway down Chain of Craters Road at about 2,000 feet, with the Pacific on one side and lava fields running out below. There are picnic tables. The long dark bands winding along the coastline are where the original road was buried by the Mauna Ulu eruption of 1969. Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

  9. Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube

Nahuku, the Thurston Lava Tube, is thought to have formed naturally after a major eruption 400 years ago. The tunnel runs about 450 m in total. Large ferns hang over the entrance, and the paved path through the cave takes about 10 minutes to walk. Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

  10. Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is a state park. The water drops about 80 feet over a lava cave, and rainbows appear in the spray often enough to have given the place its name. You can see the falls from close range, look down at the pool underneath, and climb the steps to the ground behind the drop and up to the top. The path runs through tropical forest.

  11. Beautiful and vibrant Hilo

Hilo started out on farming and fishing and became the commercial centre of the sugar industry in the 1800s. Downtown today is small and slow, with wooden storefronts among the oldest standing in Hawaii. There are national historic landmarks here, along with galleries, museums, shops, restaurants and hotels.

  12. Hilo Farmers Market

The farmers market is an open-air market in downtown Hilo, and it is where the island's own produce turns up: greens and fruit grown in Hawaii, cut flowers, jewellery and craft work. Hilo specialities are on the tables too.

  13. Richardson Ocean Park

Richardson Ocean Park is a coastal park in Hilo where the rock is black lava and the sand is black with it, both left by volcanic activity. It is one of the better places on the Big Island to see Hawaiian green sea turtles resting close to shore. Quiet, with the ocean in front of you.

  14. Lili'uokalani Gardens

Liliuokalani Park, at the end of Banyan Drive, is a 120,000 square-metre Japanese garden laid out in 1968 for the centenary of Japanese immigration. Arched bridges cross the fishponds, and there are rock gardens, pagodas, Japanese stone lanterns and a teahouse.

  15. Big Island Candies

Big Island Candies is a Hilo confectioner and one of the names people carry home from Hawaii. The chocolates, cookies and candies are made with local ingredients, and the shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate with macadamia are what the company is known for. The stop takes in the factory and the shop, both in Hilo.
