Hualalai Hidden Craters Hike: Private Land Behind Three Locked Gates
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Big Island of HawaiiKona has its own volcano, Hualalai, and this walk goes up its higher slopes on private land, through three locked gates. That access is the reason the route exists: none of it is reachable on your own. The hike runs up to 4 miles, through ancient native Hawaiian cloud forest, into a wild lava tube, and out to the edge of the fissures and craters that Kona's most recent eruption opened. The viewpoints sit above 5,000 feet, 1,525 metres, looking down the Kona coastline. The argument for doing this instead of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is straightforward: the same volcanic processes at close range, without the crowds and without spending half the day in a vehicle getting there. Check-in is at the Kailua-Kona headquarters, 15 minutes before departure, with restrooms there. The drive to the trailhead takes about 30 minutes.
