Hilo Shore Excursion: Kilauea's Caldera, a Lava Tube and the Gardens
Built for the hours a ship gives you in Hilo, and pointed at the one thing the island is known for. At the summit the stop is the Kilauea caldera, with Halemaʻumaʻu inside it. Kilauea has erupted in episodes since December 2024: a burst of fountaining that runs for a few hours, then two weeks or more of quiet. Whether one falls on the day your ship is in port is not something an operator can know when you book, and this one does not claim to. What the caldera shows on any day is what the recent activity did to it. The guide covers the older events too, and what each of them did to ground that has never stopped moving. The steam vents come next, where the heat is a physical thing rather than a description, and then the ancient lava tube, reached through rainforest that stays cool and damp whatever the coast is doing. The Chain of Craters Road crosses lava fields that have set hard, with craters to look down into. The Hilo half closes the day: Rainbow Falls, Lili'uokalani Gardens along the bay, and chocolate and coffee made on the island. The group stays small, so the stops move at a reasonable pace rather than a coach's.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Inside the park, the Kilauea caldera and what the recent eruption altered there, along with the steam vents and the formations older lava flows left behind.
Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube
A walk through Hawaiian rainforest to Nahuku, the Thurston Lava Tube, then through the tube itself, 500 years old, where hot molten lava once ran.
Chain of Craters Road
Lava fields set hard by past eruptions, and craters that were active once, looked into from above. The history, culture and geology of Kilauea come with it.

Waianuenue, or Rainbow Falls, 80 feet of it, with tropical growth around and the Hawaiian legends explained.
Big Island Candies
Hand-made chocolate, macadamia nuts grown on the island, and coffee from here too.
Lili'uokalani Gardens
Time for a slow loop of Lili'uokalani Gardens: fishponds, pagodas, and Hilo Bay right there.
