Nine hours, starting around 8:30; the exact time comes from the guide the day before. Bibi-Heybat mosque was built between 1267 and 1300 and holds the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, a descendant of Muhammad. Locally it is called the mosque of Fatima. The building standing today is a 1990s recreation of the original. Azerbaijan holds 350 of the 800 mud volcanoes known in the world, most of them around Gobustan. Local names for them are older than the geological one: Yanardagh, burning mountain; gaynacha, boiling water; bozdag, grey mountain. Some are protected as natural monuments. The track out to them is poor, so the group transfers into a special taxi, a Soviet Lada SUV, and the visit depends on the weather. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape carries more than 6,000 engravings and 40,000 years of rock art, along with inhabited caves, settlements and burials, from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. They record hunting, animals, plants and how people lived in the wet period that followed the last Ice Age. There is an indoor and open-air museum on the site. Lunch is at a traditional restaurant and costs extra. Yanar Dag is 23 km from the Old Town, north of Baku: a hillside with a wall of flame fed by gas leaking through the rock. Marco Polo wrote about these fires when he travelled here. The area became a historical, cultural and natural reserve in 2007. Ateshgah, the fire temple, closes the day. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
