Gobustan and Absheron: the 1846 Oil Well, the Mud Volcanoes and Dumas's Guest House
Nine hours, morning to late evening, and the first stop is not a volcano but a hole in the ground: the first oil well ever drilled anywhere, sunk in 1846, which gave oil on 14 July 1848. The road there passes Soviet-era pumpjacks that are still working. The mud volcanoes come next, reached by a special taxi whose fee is in the price, and only when the weather allows it. The ground there has been active for centuries and reads as lunar; people once held it to be the home of the jinns. Gobustan National Park holds the petroglyphs and the site where the first Cro-Magnons lived, with two museums to put them in order first. The guide works through how those people survived, how they organised themselves and what their days looked like. Lunch is at the Baku Restaurant, in one of the city's parks: three courses of Azerbaijani cooking with tea. It is not included in the tour price and costs 15 manat per person. Ateshgah is the fire temple. Flames came out of the ground across Absheron for centuries, and in the first century BC Hindu Brahmins and Persian Zoroastrians built here because of them. The caravanserai on the site housed the merchants crossing the country, and the guest house is where Alexandre Dumas, the father of the three musketeers, stayed. Yanar Dag closes the day: the burning mountain, with the flames coming out of the hillside itself. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
