Etna and Taormina in a Day: Silvestri Craters at 2,100 m, then Free Time
Two halves with nothing in common except the same island. The morning goes up Etna to about 1,900 metres, then walks with a mountain guide around the Silvestri craters, reaching 2,000 to 2,100 metres. The cable car up to 2,500 metres is optional and costs extra, and that is a choice worth making before you go rather than at the ticket window. The afternoon is Taormina, on the plateau of Monte Tauro. The visit is free, which means the time is yours: the panorama, the narrow streets, and buildings that are Greco-Roman in one lane and medieval in the next. There is time to walk around the shops. The mountain guide is for the Etna half. In Taormina you are on your own.
