Four stops, in this order, and each has a condition attached. Nea Kameni first. The boat ties up at the jetty and the walk goes up to the ridge, with the escort covering the volcano's history and geology on the way. The stop lasts an hour and a half, the hike is moderate rather than easy, and it needs sturdy shoes and water. Palea Kameni next, for the hot springs. The boat cannot go in: it stops 30 metres from the warm, sulphur-rich water near Agios Nikolaos beach, and you swim the rest. Thirty minutes there, and confident swimming is what it takes. Then out over the underwater craters to Thirassia, where the boat anchors for a 30-minute swim, schedule permitting. Dinner is served on board at that point, a buffet with wine included, in the middle of the caldera. The last anchorage is near Oia, for the sunset from the water.

  1. Aegean Sea, Santorini

On the option without pick-up, the tour starts at the Old Port of Fira. You get there by cable car, €10 each way, or on foot down the steps, about 30 minutes. The meeting point is the Santo Star office. Arrive 45 minutes before departure, and allow for queues if you take the cable car.

  2. Santorini Volcano

The boat comes in under the cliffs of the volcanic island and you go ashore for a guided walk up the volcanic trails, with the escort covering the geology and the eruptions as you climb. Entry to the volcano costs €5, paid there. Comfortable shoes, a sun hat and water are all worth having. From the top the caldera and the Aegean are laid out below, with steam vents and volcanic rock all around and very little that looks like anywhere else. Then back down to the boat. Stay with the escort throughout.

    Costo extra

  3. Palea Kameni

Palea Kameni is next, with the hot springs on its west side. There are 30 minutes here in thermal water heavy with volcanic minerals. The boat anchors 30 to 40 metres from the springs and you swim that distance to reach the warm, orange-coloured water, with volcanic ground all around it. This one suits confident swimmers. The distance is not long, but it is open water and it takes some stamina. Afterwards you swim back to the boat and the trip carries on.

  4. The next stop is near Thirassia Bay

Near Thirassia Bay the boat anchors in the calm water of the caldera and dinner is served on board: a buffet of Greek dishes made with fresh ingredients, with wine included. It is the quiet part of the evening, Thirassia on one side and the caldera walls on the other.

  5. Sunset in Oia

The last anchorage is near Oia, in calm water inside the caldera, which is as good a position as there is for the sunset Santorini is known for. The colours go orange, pink and gold as the sun drops. There is wine with it, and nothing to do but watch.

  6. Aegean Sea, Santorini
