Rio Celeste, les Llanos de Cortes et le sanctuaire de paresseux "Jungle Life", accessibles depuis Guanacaste
Une longue journée loin des plages de Guanacaste, avec des départs tôt le matin et trois heures de route jusqu'au parc. Les Llanos de Cortes ouvrent le spectacle. La cascade se trouve à Bagaces, et elle se jette dans une piscine avec une plage de sable autour. Tu auras le temps de nager là-bas, ou de te promener sur les sentiers et d'observer ce qui pousse et vit autour de l'eau avant que la journée ne commence vraiment. Ensuite, direction le Rio Celeste, situé à l'intérieur du Parc National du Volcan Tenorio : deux heures de randonnée de difficulté modérée à travers la forêt tropicale et le long de la rivière jusqu'à la cascade. Une chose à savoir avant de réserver : après de fortes pluies, la rivière peut parfois être marron plutôt que bleue. C'est rare, et aucun opérateur ne peut y faire quoi que ce soit. Le déjeuner est typiquement costaricien, dans un restaurant local. La dernière étape est le sanctuaire Jungle Life Sloth, une ferme biologique qui accueille des paresseux sauvés. Pendant la promenade, tu pourras observer des grenouilles, des serpents, des oiseaux et des insectes.

Cataratas Llanos de Cortes
Llanos de Cortez sits in Guanacaste, off the road and out of sight until you are nearly on top of it. The path runs through tropical forest, and the sound of the water arrives before the waterfall does. It comes down over moss-covered rock into a clear pool, with a sandy shore around the edge to sit on. The water is cold, which is the point after the drive, and most people get in. Green closes in on all sides. It is a quiet way to open a day that gets busier later.
Rio Celeste
The hike starts inside Tenorio Volcano National Park and heads for the Rio Celeste waterfall, where the water comes down a rough cliff face into the pool underneath. The trails run through dense rainforest and the birds are constant overhead. The guide covers the biodiversity of this stretch: which plants are particular to it, which animals live in it. The waterfall itself is turquoise, and the colour holds all the way into the pool below. There is time to stand and look at it, and to photograph it from more than one angle. One caveat worth reading before booking: on rare occasions, after heavy rain, the river runs brown.
Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary After immersing yourself in…
Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary comes after the Rio Celeste. The sloths there were rescued from various situations, and the sanctuary keeps them in rainforest rather than in enclosures. The guide explains how they behave, what they need, and what the conservation work involves. The same walk turns up tropical plants and flowers, birds, frogs, snakes and insects, so the sloths are not the only thing you will have seen by the end of it.
Bijagua de Upala
Lunch is a substantial Costa Rican meal at a local restaurant: gallo pinto, which is rice and beans, along with plantains, savoury meats and fresh tropical fruit.
