TamarindeEin langer Tag am Pazifik, mit Abholungen am frühen Morgen und einer dreistündigen Fahrt zum Park. Llanos de Cortes ist der erste Halt. Der Wasserfall befindet sich in Bagaces und stürzt in ein Becken mit einem sandigen Ufer. Hier hast du Zeit, zu schwimmen oder die Wege entlangzugehen und dir anzusehen, was in der Umgebung des Wassers wächst und lebt, bevor der Tag richtig beginnt. Anschließend geht es zum Rio Celeste, im Nationalpark Vulcán Tenorio: Zwei Stunden anspruchsvolle Wanderung durch Regenwald und entlang des Flusses zum Wasserfall. Eine Sache, die du vor der Buchung wissen solltest: Nach starkem Regen kann das Wasser des Flusses gelegentlich braun statt blau sein. Das ist selten, und kein Anbieter kann etwas dagegen tun. Das Mittagessen ist typisch costaricanisch, in einem lokalen Restaurant. Der letzte Halt ist das Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary, eine biologische Farm, die gerettete Faultiere aufnimmt. Hier begegnest du auf dem Spaziergang Fröschen, Schlangen, Vögeln und Insekten.

Cataratas Llanos de Cortes
Llanos de Cortez sits in Guanacaste, off the road and out of sight until you are nearly on top of it. The path runs through tropical forest, and the sound of the water arrives before the waterfall does. It comes down over moss-covered rock into a clear pool, with a sandy shore around the edge to sit on. The water is cold, which is the point after the drive, and most people get in. Green closes in on all sides. It is a quiet way to open a day that gets busier later.
Rio Celeste
The hike starts inside Tenorio Volcano National Park and heads for the Rio Celeste waterfall, where the water comes down a rough cliff face into the pool underneath. The trails run through dense rainforest and the birds are constant overhead. The guide covers the biodiversity of this stretch: which plants are particular to it, which animals live in it. The waterfall itself is turquoise, and the colour holds all the way into the pool below. There is time to stand and look at it, and to photograph it from more than one angle. One caveat worth reading before booking: on rare occasions, after heavy rain, the river runs brown.
Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary After immersing yourself in…
Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary comes after the Rio Celeste. The sloths there were rescued from various situations, and the sanctuary keeps them in rainforest rather than in enclosures. The guide explains how they behave, what they need, and what the conservation work involves. The same walk turns up tropical plants and flowers, birds, frogs, snakes and insects, so the sloths are not the only thing you will have seen by the end of it.

Lunch is a substantial Costa Rican meal at a local restaurant: gallo pinto, which is rice and beans, along with plantains, savoury meats and fresh tropical fruit.
