Rincón de la Vieja : Les Pailas, Oropéndola et dix sources chaudes
Trois étapes et une longue journée, avec un départ entre six heures et huit heures et demie du matin selon ton lieu d'hébergement. La marche est le circuit de Las Pailas, 3,5 km (2 miles), avec un guide naturaliste bilingue. Le Rincón de la Vieja est le volcan le plus vaste et le plus actif du Guanacaste, et c'est dans ce secteur que cela se voit : des fumerolles qui crachent vapeur et soufre d'un sol jaune et rouille, des marmites d'argile où bout une eau de toutes les nuances de brun, une boue grise qui bouillonne et gicle, et un mini-cratère. Le parc abrite plus de 300 espèces d'oiseaux, ainsi que des tatous, des iguanes, des coatis, des toucans et trois espèces de singes. Ensuite, une courte marche hors du parc jusqu'à la cascade d'Oropéndola et au lagon bleu à ses pieds, où l'on peut se baigner. Le déjeuner est typiquement costaricien, et il est suivi des sources chaudes du Río Negro : dix bassins d'eau minérale claire chauffée par le volcan lui-même, en forêt tropicale sèche, avec en plus l'argile volcanique à s'étaler sur la peau. Lis la liste des points de prise en charge avant de réserver. La plupart des points sont inclus, mais certains entraînent des frais de transport distincts, facturés par réservation et non par personne : 70 $ depuis Playa Penca, depuis les hôtels de la péninsule de Papagayo et depuis Las Catalinas, et 50 $ depuis Hacienda Pinilla et le JW Marriott. Dans les hôtels RIU, la prise en charge se fait à la barrière de sécurité principale plutôt qu'à la réception, et il te faut une copie de ton passeport. Si tu viens par tes propres moyens, tu retrouves le guide à l'entrée du parc à 9 h.

Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja
The national park walk. With a bilingual naturalist guide, 3.5 km (2 miles) round the Las Pailas circular path, through tropical forest, with the best views of the volcano along it. The park holds more than 300 species of bird and a great many other animals: armadillos, iguanas, coatis, white-faced, howler and spider monkeys, toucans and more. There are stops for the volcanic activity, the bubbling mud pots, the fumaroles and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector is where the power of Rincón de la Vieja, the largest and most active volcano in Guanacaste, is most obvious. Steam and sulphur come out of natural fumaroles in yellow and rust-coloured ground. There are clay pots in several shades of brown with volcanic water boiling in them, and fine grey mud that bubbles and, in the larger pots, throws itself about. No other volcano in Costa Rica does this.
Oropendola Warterfall
After the hike, a short walk off the path to the Oropéndola waterfall, just outside the park, where you can get into the blue lagoon underneath it.
Rio Negro Hot Springs
Hot springs and volcanic mud bath. After lunch, the drive to the springs. The Río Negro hot springs sit in dry tropical forest and have ten pools, with water heated by the Rincón de la Vieja volcano itself. The mineral water is clear and untreated. There is also the volcanic mud, which you smooth over yourself and let dry.
