Une journée complète sur Faial avec Ramiro, qui vit sur l'île, en petit groupe et dans un véhicule confortable. Deux choses sur cet itinéraire sont difficiles à voir ailleurs. À Capelinhos, le phare a encore son premier étage sous terre, enseveli sous la cendre, et le Costado da Nau marque l'endroit où Faial s'arrêtait avant que l'éruption de 1957 ne redessine la côte. À Porto do Comprido se trouve un village baleinier presque entièrement recouvert de sable et de cendre volcanique. Au XIXe siècle, c'était l'une des stations baleinières les plus importantes des Açores. Le reste de la journée se déroule ainsi. Le Monte da Guia, un cône à deux cratères semi-circulaires au-dessus de Porto Pim et de Horta. Le belvédère de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, sur la vieille ville, la baie et Praia do Almoxarife. Puis la plage elle-même, la plus grande plage de sable volcanique de Faial et l'une des plus grandes des Açores, avec du temps libre pour nager, marcher ou s'asseoir dans un café. Le déjeuner se prend dans un restaurant local, à l'écart des circuits touristiques habituels. Ensuite, la route au-dessus de Flamengos, la seule paroisse de l'île sans accès direct à la mer, et la Caldeira, 2 000 mètres de diamètre, 7 000 mètres de circonférence et 400 mètres de profondeur, avec une courte marche sur le bord. L'itinéraire est l'itinéraire habituel, mais il n'est pas figé. La saison et la météo décident de ce qui est possible, et lorsqu'une étape doit être supprimée, une autre la remplace, notamment des piscines volcaniques naturelles ou des parcs forestiers. Les places sont limitées, car les groupes restent petits.

At the ferry station the meeting point is outside, by the glass exit door, between 9:15 and 9:20. The landmark is the square with the taxi rank immediately outside. Your guide meets you there in a grey Opel van.

  1. Faial Island

    The itinerary above is the usual shape of the day, but it is not fixed. What gets visited, and how long each stop takes, can change with the season and the weather. When a place has to be dropped another goes in its place: natural volcanic pools, forest parks, whatever the day allows.

  2. Monte Da Guia Walking Trail

    A volcanic cone with two craters, both semicircular, standing over the Porto Pim beach and the town of Horta. The view down is the reason for the stop.

  3. Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao

    From the Nossa Senhora da Conceição monument the old town and the bay of Horta lie on one side, Praia do Almoxarife on the other. Pico is across the water, with the highest mountain in Portugal on it. With no cloud, São Jorge and Graciosa come into view as well.

  4. Praia do Almoxarife

    The largest volcanic sand beach on Faial and one of the largest in the Azores, with Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa across the water. There is free time here: a drink at a cafe, a walk on the sand or round the parish, or a swim in water that stays temperate. Lunch follows at a local restaurant, away from the usual tourist routes.

  5. Flamengos

    The road to the Caldeira do Faial passes above Flamengos with the whole parish in view. Flamengos is the only one on the island with no direct access to the sea, closed in by mountains and volcanoes.

  6. Caldeira

    The Caldeira sits in the centre of the island and is the true ex-libris of Faial: one of the largest volcanic craters in the Azores, and the thing the island grew from. Around 2,000 metres across, 7,000 metres round and 400 metres deep. There is time for a short walk, for photographs, or for standing still and looking at what the ground can do.

  7. Capelinhos

    Capelinhos, one of the biggest draws in the Atlantic and certainly in the Azores, with ground that looks lunar: grey sand against green hills, blue sea and sky behind. Free time here to pick what you do. The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, a walk over the sand and volcanic ash, the lighthouse whose first floor is still underground, or the Costado da Nau, which is where the island of Faial ended before the eruption.

  8. We will visit the Natural Pools of Porto do Comprido

    The natural pools at Porto do Comprido, basalt basins left when incandescent lava set in the sea. The route passes the whaling village that stood here and is now nearly buried under sand and volcanic ash. In the 19th century Porto do Comprido was one of the most important whaling stations in the archipelago.

  • The tours usually end at 16:30, but we are flexible with the schedule. A good solution for travelers who wish to return to Pico at the end of the tour.

  • For reservations without lunch included, the tour provides for an approximately 1 hour stop at a local restaurant, where a buffet with traditional Azorean dishes is offered. The lunch is optional, with a fairly affordable cost between 12,50€ and 13,50€ per person, including soup, fish and meat dishes, salads and bread. Drinks, dessert and coffee have a separate cost. Participants who choose not to have lunch should wait during this period. However, if the whole group prefers not to make the stop for lunch, the tour will continue uninterrupted and may end about 1 hour earlier.
  • In the summer, there is the possibility of taking a dive at Almoxarife Beach! Don't forget to bring bathing suit and a towel. There's a place to swap on the beach. There is only one rule: you have to be dry before you go back to the cart.
  • If you travel with luggage, you don’t have to worry, the trunk luggage compartment has plenty of space to accommodate everything with comfort, so you can enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Meeting point

  • The meeting point at the ferry station is outside, next to the exit door (glass door) between 9:15 and 9:20. As a reference, there is a taxi square/stop at the exit. Your guide will meet you at that location, in a grey Opel van.
