Surabaya – Mont Bromo – Cascade de Tumpak Sewu – Excursion "Feu bleu" d'Ijen - Bali, 4 jours, 3 nuits

Surabaya

Day one. Pick-up at 9 am from your hotel in Surabaya, or from the airport or the train station, depending on how you arrive. Surabaya to the Bromo area takes 3 hours, through countryside and villages. The guide will point you to a local restaurant for lunch and the cooking of the area. Bring a jacket and something warm for the arrival: Bromo is cold, especially in the evening. Optional: an earlier start from Surabaya makes the Madakaripura waterfall possible. The cost of that one is yours. Say so beforehand if you want it.

Mount Bromo

Day two starts at 3:30 am. A local jeep driver collects you and drives about 40 minutes to Kingkong Hill. The sun comes up at 5:30, so there is time for hot coffee or tea at the shop near the top. Kingkong Hill is the sunrise point that holds Cemara Lawang village, Mount Bromo, Mount Batok and Mount Semeru in a single view. After that the jeep drops into the sea of sand, with a stop to look up at the volcano from the bottom and to take the photograph with the jeep in it. Five minutes more to the start of the trek, then 45 minutes on foot to the peak of Mount Bromo. Breakfast and a shower, then the drive to the Lumajang area, about 4 hours to Tumpak Sewu.

Day three begins around 5 am, because the waterfall is best at 7, after sunrise, when the light is even enough to see the colour of the water rather than burn it out. On a good morning there is mist around it, which is what makes the photographs. The drive from Lumajang town takes an hour and a half to two hours, and the road zig-zags, so sit accordingly. Tumpak Sewu is not the only fall here: Kapas Biru is in the same place. The path is slippery and the fencing is traditional bamboo, so watch your footing. Around 11:00 it is back to the car and about 6 hours to the hotel in the Banyuwangi area, before the midnight trek up Ijen.

Ijen Crater Indonesia

The last day starts around 1 am at the hotel in Banyuwangi. An hour's drive to Paltuding, the car park where the trekking gear gets sorted out. The walk takes about 2 hours to the blue fire. The path is slippery and rocky in places, so listen to the guide. After the flames, the route climbs to the sunrise point over the crater lake, the largest sulphuric lake in Indonesia, with an acidity of pH 0.5. Around 7 am back to Paltuding, then the hotel for breakfast and packing. After check-out, the transfer to Ketapang ferry port, and the crossing to Bali takes about an hour.
